The Meaning of Vive la France!
The Meaning of 'Vive la France!' Vive la France! is an articulation utilized in France to show enthusiasm. Itââ¬â¢s hard to make an interpretation of the term truly into English, yet it for the most part implies ââ¬Å"long live France!â⬠or ââ¬Å"hurray for France!â⬠The expression has its underlying foundations inà Bastille Day, aà French national occasion recognizing the raging of the Bastille, which occurred on July 14, 1789, and denoted the start of the French Revolution. Devoted Phrase ââ¬Å"Vive la France!â⬠is for the most part utilized by legislators, yet you will likewise hear this energetic articulation bandied about during national festivals, for example, Bastille Day, around French races, during games, and, tragically, now and again of emergency as an approach to summon devoted emotions. La Bastille was a jail and an image of the government in late eighteenth century France. By catching the noteworthy structure, the populace signaledâ that it currently held the ability to manage the nation. Bastille Day was announced a French national occasion on July 6, 1880, on legislator Benjamin Raspails suggestion, when theà Third Republicâ was solidly settled in. The Third Republic was a period in France that kept going from 1870 to 1940. Bastille Day has such a solid connotation for the French in light of the fact that the occasion represents the introduction of the republic. The related expression Vive le 14 juillet! (actually ââ¬Å"Long live the fourteenth of July!â⬠) has been related with the noteworthy occasion for a considerable length of time. The key term in the expression is vive,â an interposition that actually implies long live. The Grammar Behind Vive la France French language structure can be precarious. The term viveâ is no special case. Viveâ comes from the unpredictable action word ââ¬Å"vivre,â⬠which intends to live. Vive is the subjunctive. In this way, a model sentence mightâ be: Nous souhaitons, nous espã ©rons que la France vive longtemps, heureusement. This means: We trust that France will live for quite a while, luckily. Note, that the action word is vive and not viva, as in Viva Las Vegas, and it is articulated veev, where the last e is quiet. Different Uses for Vive The articulation vive is extremely normal in French to show eagerness for a wide range of things, for example, Vive les vacances!â Yippee for the excursion! Vive les soldes! Yippee for the business season! Vive moi! Definitely me! Viveâ is likewise utilized in various different settings that are not identified with the popular expression yet at the same time significant in the French language. Models include: On ne voyait à ¢me qui vive. There wasnt a living soul to be seen. Etre sur le qui-vive. To be on the alarm. La vive-eau Spring tide Vivement Bluntly, strongly While the expression Vive la France is profoundly established in French culture, history, and governmental issues, the full motto is commonly conjured distinctly on chronicled events and during political occasions. On the other hand, the key term in the expression, vive, is generally utilized by the French to communicate euphoria and bliss on numerous events. In this way, whenever youre in France (or wind up among French-speakers who happen to utilize this well known expression), dazzle them with your profound information on French history. Discipline As Folklore Essay Example For Students
Order As Folklore Essay There is no compelling reason to contend whether order has a job in the public eye. The sorts, seriousness, and suitability are easy to refute, however it clearly fills a need. This applies on a worldwide scale, with gatherings, for example, NATO and the UN, right down to singular family units. The nuclear family goes about as a preparation camp for forthcoming individuals from a network by showing kids what is anticipated from them through model and control. In spite of the fact that the philosophy differs from family unit to-family unit, culture-to-culture, here and there; we as a whole have needed to reply to power sooner or later. The strategies and exercises went from age to age are saved in the retelling of our own encounters to each other. These accounts can likewise fill in as a symbol of respect; verification that we have endure the tempest and are commendable citizenry. An assessment of the meeting answers uncovers variety between the sorts of discipline that drill sergeants, for the most part guardians, decided to utilize. In spite of the fact that not all around reflected in the transcript, the individuals who were restrained cruelly, with one special case, express that they manage the cost of their folks less respectability and don't see themselves copying the methodology of their older folks. It is intriguing to note, notwithstanding; that the offenses themselves will in general be comparative. Five of the eight recorded reactions list lying as a culpable offense. Lack of respect or getting in no-no circumstances is by all accounts an ongoing theme too. Most of respondents share sees about the goals behind their folks activities, all the more explicitly, they perceive that order is a methods for guardians to ?instruct me what they thought about the correct method to act dependent on their good and strict convictions. While gathering the informat ion, I was amazed to perceive how energetic individuals were to share such private parts of their lives. I distributed inquiries to certain companions in the library (open air fire) who immediately started thinking back about youth encounters. The discussion pulled in the consideration of close by studiers and passers by who halted to tune in or toss in an individual story or two. I ended up energetically contending with my interviewees over who had the most, the most amusing, or the most stunning stories. By recounting to their story, individuals uncover themselves. Their character is featured by the sort of story they tell and the manner in which they tell it. Clarifications for a people conduct may get apparent in a functionalist sense: Why I am how I am is investigated through a declaration of sentiments and suppressed feelings through references of the past. This legitimately identifies with Phenuminology and Znamieckis conversation of information on self. A few reactions mirro r an adjustment in cognizance, for example, I was gotten. I understand that my father was really smooth and on the off chance that I would do going to accomplish something I wasnt expected to, I must be progressively cautious and take a gander at all the conceivable outcomes of getting captured. Another significant part of the recounting the story is in strengthening the quick network. By tongue in cheek sharing our lowliness, we have the chance to reinforce our commonality and bond with one another as Swarthmore understudies. The connection among order and old stories may appear to be ambiguous from the start. The way to overcoming any barrier lies in the manner the connection is set up. Rather than discovering likenesses between the two, it is important to see discipline as a type of old stories. In this way managing discipline the entirety of the guidelines and specifications of its expected parent. The story that the interviewees tell is an away from of an individual account. The qualities of old stories with respect to the saint design, as it concerns an abused youth who endures the rage of the malevolent witch , are fulfilled in many records. This is foremost to fantasies, for example, Cinderella, which show the insidious stepmother. The closeness between the two suggests the indication of genuine circumstances in the legendary stories. Order imitates the kiss that transforms the frog into a sovereign. The realness of this kiss originates from lips that kissed, or in plain English, these are not a re sult of innovation or interpretation by an outside tongue. It is an immediate impression of a societies esteems as instructed to the individuals who will end up being the meat of the previously mentioned culture. When gotten some information about the intentions of their slave drivers, the interviewees by and large concurred that discipline, similar to old stories, is a technique used to instruct. This follows Piagets considers that recommend that there are essential strides in a childs advancement that are widespread paying little mind to the general public they originate from. The likeness across societies would loan to a monogenesis of humankind. Order, as fables, educates us how to be humanized and polite. It is the basic piece of forming into a good individual from humankind. Bibliographynoneresearch projectAnthropology

What I Knew About Being An Artist - 1141 Words
What I knew about being an Artist Growing up in a family full of creative minds it wasnââ¬â¢t hard to find my own talent. I became obsessed with art at a young age, drawing anything that caught my fancy whether it be cats, dogs, or power puff girls. I loved to draw. I found that with my drawing I had a natural desire to get better and build upon my talent. In the later years of middle school when the time came that we were deciding our future careers I didnââ¬â¢t want to be an artist. I wanted to just quit my talent and be like the other girls who could sing and dance, I thought my talent useless. But through the years I found that any occupation besides an artist would make me miserable. Art is the career for me; I have spent long hours developing my art, researching art history, examining the work place/education requirements, learning from the masters(through books and TV programs), and imagining my future life as an artist. I have more yet to learn but I am ready and willing to go further. What I Learned about Artists Obviously the primary duties of an artist are to create images, sculptures, paintings, photographs, installations, and a number of other art forms that help convey a feeling or idea in a public or private space. Improving Society Millââ¬â¢s On Liberty and Marxââ¬â¢s Communist...
Society is built and run on social and moral obligations and while these two are closely related, both impact cultures around the world in different ways. Marxââ¬â¢s Communist Manifesto and Millââ¬â¢s On Liberty demonstrate the relationship these obligations have with successful and unsuccessful social constructs. For the purposes of this paper, a moral obligation is a consideration of what is rightà ¬Ã ¬Ã ¬ and wrong and can vary depending on pressures from external sources such as religion, while a social obligation is a responsibility the individual has to act to benefit the best interests of their class as well as supporting the stability between society and the individual. Marxââ¬â¢s views of social obligation differ from Millââ¬â¢s in that by Marxââ¬â¢s view, there are two classes with their own social agendas and obligations to their own class, whereas Millââ¬â¢s idea is that all members of a society should act in a way that brings about the most benefit for everyone, without causing harm to others. Marx shows that there is a split in advancement of society due to self-interest since the Bourgeoisie is trying maintain the status quo when he says that there is ââ¬Å"Constant revolutionizing of productionsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditionsâ⬠(Marx 12), while the Proletariat is trying to break the status quo. Mill on the other hand believes advancement comes from the expression and discussion of all opinions, even those that donââ¬â¢t represent the favor of the majority. Zimbabwe Sustainable Development Tourism
Question: Discuss the following points.. Analysis the sustainability methods has been used in Zimbabwe to develop the tourism industry Describe the sustainability theories adopted in Zimbabwe and give examples? Answer: Introduction: Zimbabwe is one of beautiful tourist attractions in Africa. Its wildlife scenario drives many tourists to visit here and experience the exquisite views of the country. Places like Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park are extremely famous. The culture and the people are very different from the rest of the countries. Although the economy of the country is not much satisfactory but still it attracts a lot of tourists which actually helps in the improvement of the tourism sector in many ways. Here a study is made on the different types of sustainability methods used in Zimbabwe. Sustainibility Methods: Sustainability is basically a method of sustainable development that meets the basic and normal needs of the present time failing to make any sacrifices or compromises in the future time. It actually focuses on how the social, economic and environmental needs can be balanced. In Zimbabwe, tourism is an emerging industry. Various sustainability methods were undertaken to improve the tourism industry. Proper judgmental strategies should also be adopted. The main objectives of Sustainable Development are to increase the economic growth attainment of basic needs involving more number of people controlling population growth conservation of the environment change in technology managing risk development Environment should be considered in case of taking decisions (Lin Pleskovic, 2011). Sustainable Development has two types of approaches. One is the outcome approach and the other is the opportunity approach. Outcome approach focuses on the flow variable variables while the opportunity approach focuses on the stock variables. The aim of outcome approach is to maximize social welfare while the aim of opportunity approach is to consider the weak and the strong sustainability (Roosa, 2010). The sustainability methods also depend on the broad scenario of environment. The certain factors of environments include soil, vegetation, land rights, different strategies of environment, livestock farming, wildlife culture etc. Soil - In case of the soils, scientists are considering the way the people of Zimbabwe has classified the soil in two types. In the first case the soil type is specified .Scientists consider this very important because this past nature of the soils will help them to determine which kind of soil one should use and help them in yielding crops. Another factor they considered was the study of soil from the point of view of the farmers. Farmers better understand what kind of soil is particularly good for that plant. This will basically help to restrict the depletion of natural resources. Livestock Majority of the population is engaged in agricultural activity. So it is important to improve the livestock farming in the agricultural sector. The tourism industry in Zimbabwe plays an important role in the lives of the rural people and thus it helps to improve sustainable development. Wildlife- Before colonization, wildlife played a significant role as people of the country use wildlife for their food source. At one point of time there was a huge conflict between the rural people and the wildlife authority. The rural people had no option but to hunt the animals and have their food. However this conflict was solved after a lot of disagreements and finally it resulted in the improvement in the diversity of the country. Environmental Strategies- Strategies like less killing of animals, less wastage of soil, water etc were adopted so that the country can experience rich heritage in terms of sustainable development (Lundsgaarde, 2012). Sustainibility Theories Sustainable tourism is one kind of tourism which tries not to affect the environment adversely, but it wants to maximize its effects in the factors like employment, income, environmental improvement of the country etc. It should be developed in such a way that the integrity of the country is well balanced. Without affecting the social, cultural and economic aspects how the country can optimize to create more jobs in the tourism sectors. In this scenario different types of tourism are there, like Eco tourism, community based tourism, conservation (Ramaswamy Sathis Kumar, n.d.). Eco tourism Eco tourism is basically a kind of tourism which focuses on the countrys cultural heritage. It also gives the idea of the flora and fauna of the country to the visitor so that he gets educated about the destination. It includes the type of the tourist and activities of the tourist. It also helps in improving the conservation of the economy and unites several cultures together. It gives financial help to the local residents as well as the economy (Baumgartner and Korhonen, 2010). For example people of the country are involved in CAMPFIRE PROJECTS. This project basically gives the rural people an idea about the strategies to apply in the wildlife conservation, how the environment can be benefited in terms of natural resources, its people and the culture. They can even earn money for their better livelihood. In the north west of Zimbabwe (Binga district) there was shortage of schools. People in this district were below poverty level. But getting engaged in this project helped the local people to improve their livelihood. Previously there were only 13 primary schools but now it has 56 primary schools and several health clinics (Williams, 2010). Community based tourism -Community based tourism is a kind of tourism in which the economically backward and rural people invite the visitors to stay in their communities so that they can earn income by providing different services to the visitors for that period of stay. It actually focuses on the holistic nature of development and improves the economic welfare but adds to the cost of tourism industry (Pineda Brebbia, 2010). For example: This type of tourism started in the year of 1980 in Namibia whose main objective was to remove the act of poaching and also to increase the benefits of the local people. Conservation- Conservation is basically the act of protecting the environment from the bad affects of the different natural resources. It generates macroeconomic development as well as the improvement of the foreign exchange. It also generates great benefits to the economy. It is famous for its wildlife conservation ('Conservation and Politics', 2010). For example: In the area of Southern Africa, this idea of conservation is very significant. It helps to sustain resources in an appropriate manner and thereby improves the global environment (Gu Liu, 2013). Evaluation of key drivers and stakeholder strategies: Stakeholders strategies are an important factor in the evolution of sustainability. Stakeholders basically make important choice for developing the management strategies. They use their strategies to generate financial improvements. Tourism industry is basically identified as the stakeholders capability to understand the development of the country. For this kind of practice a sequence is followed in the way of research, strategic decisions and execution in practical field (Leung, Bingham Davies, 2010). It can be stated that, there are many areas where the stakeholders execution can be utilized, but, unfortunately, the execution has not been utilized in the field of Zimbabwean tourism industry. However, with these strategic executions there can be huge improvement both in the qualitative and quantitative field. The main thing one needs to understand is that this industry of tourism is highly competitive, unsteady and volatile. So there is a need to make deep study of the importance of stakeholders strategies and their executions. If the stakeholders take some time to cooperate then the tourism industry can become a useful tool for the long term economic development and growth in Zimbabwe. This may also help to lessen the conflict that existed between the man and the wildlife. Principles, Practices And Frameworks Of Sustainable Tourism Development Principles As we know sustainable tourism is a vital in the lives of the local people of Zimbabwe. Sustainable tourism is one of the biggest industries. It creates employment, helps people to travel from one place to the other, resources are highly consumed and life of the people is highly affected (Gu and Liu, 2013). Earlier the types of sustainable tourism were discussed. But there can be more types of tourism. Like under eco tourism there can be more sub parts like rural tourism, nature tourism, and cultural tourism. With sustainable tourism there exists unsustainable tourism as well. They are mainly beach tourism. Now discussion will be made on the principles of these types of tourisms. The principles are discussed from the point of view of three aspects: social, economical and ecological (Freeman, 2010). Ecological Aspect The most important aspect is to minimize the adverse effects of eco tourism. Natural resources are to be preserved and conserved. The observation of the visitor is to promote the positive use of eco tourism Social Aspect Importance of proper participation and appropriate information. Experiences of tourism are also important. Here the observation is on the sensitivity of the culture towards the local people and also towards the stakeholders. Economical Aspect Different types of policy, management of resources and strategies are adopted and it plays a significant role. To curb the limit of tourism development. Profit should be generated for the people who are economically backward (www.worldbank.org, 2015). Practices and frameworks: Different types of policy practices and frameworks were introduced in the case of sustainable development. This policy divides into different areas concerning women, children, business partner, and different types NGOs etc. These groups are further considered for different types of management resources. In African countries like Zimbabwe, these practices and frameworks needed reviews because many socio-economic, environmental issues are cropping up, for example, in the Brut land Report, Agenda 21, there were presence of many legal and policy changes to the existing framework and strategies, but these changes had been characterized as inefficient to promote economic development (JSD, 2010). For these changes, various policy reviews have begun which actually stated that these framework and policies promotes decentralization of the state control over resources to local communities, cooperation among the private land owners and different local companies. Different stakeholders have diffe rent interests. So there exists multiple integrity among the stakeholders. The aim of achieving sustainable tourism is a very difficult objective with multiple interests of the stakeholders. In the promotion of sustainable development these existing policy practices and frameworks should not be underrated. There are different arguments on this, the first one is that the state is the manager and the ultimate controller of resources and the state is the one who should develop ways to ensure that there is sustainable resource management and complete optimization of resources. It also argues that the State should be the one to take responsibility of costs and prices associated with the management of resources. But this kind of responsibilities cannot be fulfilled by states in Africa particularly by Zimbabwe (BBC News, 2015). Problems and Issues Related with Tourism in Zimbabwe Tourism industry in Zimbabwe is one the fastest growing sectors .It is the bread and butter of many people in the country. With many benefits it has many problems as well. In the discussion below, the aim is to focus more on the issues related to politics, environment and economics which are actually hampering the growth of the tourism industry (Gretzel, Law and Fuchs, 2010). Political issues: From the pre- colonial period there was a political intolerance to bring peace in the nation. People were threatened to get harmed if they voted against the party ruling at that time in country. The rural people faced more torture and humiliation. For example in the year of 2000, the elections were distinguished by violence, brutal abuse and even killing of the people. These had various negative affects in the country like deterioration of economic growth, economy was unsteady, and infrastructure was hugely destructed. These effects actually affected the common people of the country who had to fight everyday with several challenges and have to overcome them with positive solutions. So these types of political issues are actually hampering the development of tourism industry (Matunhu Munemo, 2011). Environmental issues: Environment in any country was important in the aspect of economic development. But every country is not perfect. There are some environmental issues with most of the countries in the world. Zimbabwe is not an exceptional as well. Major issues include erosion of soil, deforestation, polluted air and water, poaching of animals and exporting them to other countries. Environmental problems are essentially the global problems. These also hinder the development of sustainable tourism (JSD, 2010). Economic issues: Majority of the Zimbabwes economy is classified by agriculture. High unemployment rate is one of the important economic issues in the country. Though literacy rate of both male and female population is quite high but due to high unemployment rate the economy slows down. The economy also faced huge hyperinflation in the period of 2008-2009. However, in the recent times many local people are engaged in the tourism industry and its contribution to GDP has increased, thereby creating jobs to thousands of unemployed people. This has helped to improve the economic growth in the country (Baumgartner Korhonen, 2010). Social and cultural factors: Like other African countries Zimbabwes culture is not that diverse. The society is patriarchal. Women are tortured and are not independent. Two types of caste existed here i.e. Shone and Ndebele. The degradation of the country also results in the cultural differences among the various categories of people. Racial discrimination can be identified as a major issue in the country and thus it degrades development in the country (Singh, 2010). Future prediction: It can be predicted that if the hyperinflation continues to exist at this pace then the economy will eventually collapse. Despite a high literacy rate, many people cannot get a job and it results in huge unemployment. Lot of environmental issues can also be solved if some strategies like increasing the living of the people, widening the availability and distribution of subsistence needs to the people, increasing the socio-economic needs are undertaken. Thus it will help in enhancing sustainable tourism. However, if the tourism industry is developed on a large basis in future, it can play an important tool in reducing unemployment and also to achieve a steady economic growth in future (Wang, 2010). Conclusion Thus it can be concluded that the sustainable tourism has promoted Zimbabwe beneficially. Its contribution to GDP has increased and livelihood of the people has also improved. Nowadays it has become very popular many people consider it as their occupation. Day by day the economy is improving. So overcoming different socio-economic difficulties, Zimbabwe can become a developed country in the world. Definition of Clipper Ship A clipper was a very fast sailing ship of the early to mid-1800s.à According to a comprehensive book published in 1911, The Clipper Ship Era by Arthur H. Clark, the term clipper was originally derived from slang in the early 19th century. To clip it or to go at a fast clip meant to travel fast. So it is reasonable to assume the word was simply attached to ships which had been built for speed, and as Clark put it,à seemed to clip over the waves rather than plough through them. Historians differ on when the first true clipper ships were built, but there is general agreement that they became well established in the 1840s. The typical clipper had three masts, was square-rigged, and had a hull designed to slice through the water. The most famous designer of clipper ships was Donald McKay, who designed the Flying Cloud, a clipper that set an astounding speed record of sailing from New York to San Francisco in less than 90 days. McKays shipyard in Boston produced notable clippers, but a number of the sleek and speedy boats were built alongside the East River, in shipyards in New York City. A New York shipbuilder, William H. Webb, was also known for producing clipper ships before they fell out of fashion. The Reign of the Clipper Ships Clipper ships became economically useful because they could deliver very valuable material faster than more ordinary packet ships. During the California Gold Rush, for instance, clippers were seen to be very useful as supplies, ranging from lumber to prospecting equipment, could be rushed to San Francisco. And, people who booked passage on clippers could expect to get to their destination faster than those who sailed on ordinary ships. During the Gold Rush, when fortune hunters wanted to race to the California gold fields, the clippers became extremely popular. Clippers became especially important for international the tea trade, as tea from China could be transported to England or America in record time. Clippers were also used to transport easterners to California during the Gold Rush, and to transport Australian wool to England. Clipper ships had some serious disadvantages. Because of their sleek designs, they could not carry as much cargo as a wider ship could. And sailing a clipper took extraordinary skill. They were the most complicated sailing ships of their time, and their captains needed to possess excellent seamanship to handle them, especially in high winds. Clipper ships were eventually made obsolete by steam ships, and also by the opening of the Suez Canal, which dramatically cut sailing time from Europe to Asia and made speedy sailing ships less necessary. Notable Clipper Ships Following are examples of illustrious clipper ships: The Flying Cloud: Designed by Donald McKay, the Flying Cloud became famous for setting a spectacular speed record, sailing fromà New York Cityà to San Francisco in 89 days and 21 hours in the summer of 1851. To make the same run in less than 100 days was considered remarkable, and only 18 sailing ships ever accomplished that. The New York to San Francisco record was only bettered twice, once again by the Flying Cloud in 1854, and in 1860 by the clipper ship Andrew Jackson. The Great Republic: Designed and built by Donald McKay in 1853, it was intended to be the largest and fastest clipper. The launch of the ship in October 1853 was accompanied with great fanfare when the city of Boston declared a holiday and thousands watched the festivities. Two months later, on December 26, 1853, the ship was docked on the East River in lower Manhattan, being prepared for its first voyage. A fire broke out in the neighborhood and winter winds tossed burning embers in the air. The rigging of the G reat Republic caught fire and flames spread down to the ship. After being scuttled, the ship was raised and rebuilt. But some of the grandeur was lost.à Red Jacket: Aà clipper built in Maine, ità set a speed record between New York City and Liverpool, England, of 13 days and one hour. The ship spent its glory years sailing between England and Australia, and eventually was used, as were many other clippers, transporting lumber from Canada. The Cutty Sark: A late era clipper, it wasà built in Scotland in 1869. It is unusual as it still exists today as a museum ship, and is visited by tourists. The tea trade between England and China was very competitive, and Cutty Sark was built when clippers had been essentially perfected for speed. It served in the tea trade for about seven years, and later in the trade in wool between Australia and England. The ship was used as a training vessel well into the 20th century, and in the 1950s was placed in a dry dock to serve as a museum.

The economy today Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The economy today - Essay Example In a closed economy, if the government raises its budget deficit in the short run, both prices and GDP will rise. In the new equilibrium the real income is unchanged but the nominal is higher. The demand for money, then, increases. This means that with a fixed money supply the interest rate will rise so reducing the investment. Thus, the new equilibrium has lower investment demand and lower national savings. This is known as the crowding-out effect. In the case of a large recessionary gap the crowding out effect is much less important because with the rise of GDP determined by the government the volume of private savings will increase and will finance the deficit. By reducing private investment, the crowding out effect implies that the stock of capital to pass on to the future generation will be smaller and smaller will be the output as well. This is the long-term burden of the debt. If government spending crowds out private investment and reduces the wealth of a country, deficits ar e not eliminated or reduced because of short term stabilization policy that reduces the deficit involving real costs today, in higher taxes and lower government services, in exchange for benefits in the future. Such exchange does not appeal to everyone. However, there is little evidence to back up the idea of government borrowing "crowds out" private borrowing and thus reduces private investment and increases interest rates. ... Private savings and investment are reduced by government expenditures--regardless of whether they are financed by government borrowing or by taxation. Either way the private individual is left with less money, and ultimately with fewer resources. The attempt to replace

Should Veil be Banned in the UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Should Veil be Banned in the UK - Essay Example Considering Sura 7:46, a veil acts as a separation between the resident of Heaven and the resident of Hell. In Sura 19: 16-17, a veil is remarked as the symbol of sovereignty and purity. Other explanations in the Quran also describe veil as a separation of evil with the good (Amer, 2000). On this note of an affirmative definition of veiling one shall think that why veil should be banned in the UK or any other country contradicting preaches of Islam and the belief of Islamic women. It was in the year 2006, when Mr. Jack Straw, a leader of the House of Commons in the UK stated ââ¬ËHijabââ¬â¢ to increase the differences between Islamic religion and other religious groups and remarked the practice as a ââ¬Å"visible statement of separationâ⬠. This incident was led by the suspension of an assistant teacher wearing veil in her workplace (Sultan-ul-Qalam, 2006). Since then, the practice of wearing veil in the UK by Muslim women has become debatable in relation to the judgment be hind banning the veil in the economic region. The paper presented here will intend to discuss various aspects related to this issue with due regards to local and global values regarding ââ¬ËHijabââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËFull Face Veilââ¬â¢ along with cultural imperialism and national sovereignty of the UK. The role of media will also be analysed to obtain rational in relation to the debated topic of banning veil in the UK. Local Values vs. Global Values Abraham (2007), in his study adroitly states ââ¬Å"Just as complex discourses have developed around the metaphor of ââ¬Ëthe closetââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëcoming out of the closetââ¬â¢, the metaphor of ââ¬Ëthe veilââ¬â¢ and the concept of ââ¬Ëlifting the veilââ¬â¢ have developed their own political debatesâ⬠. With due consideration to this explanation of veil, the local values can be recognised in this context. Veil which is also called ââ¬ËNaqabââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËHijabââ¬â¢ originates as an Arabic word that refers to as barrier. Moving further from the lexicon explanation, veil has a broader meaning in the local values of Islam. It largely indicates towards the philosophy of modesty in both men and women (Long, 2009: 93-94). However, in the current day context, the most common metaphor of Hijab is an Islamic woman wearing on veil to cover her head, her face and her body. Furthermore, according to the Islamic values, a veil also tends to provide sexual space to the women in the society indicating that women should keep themselves covered in front of any unknown male figure with whom they were unable to theoretically be engaged, i.e. men who do not relate with their family (Long, 2009: 93-94; Abraham, 2007). Even in the current practices, veil is considered by Muslim women to provide them with space in terms of sovereignty and modesty as well as in terms of sexuality (Gabriel & Hannan, 2011). On the contrary, from a generalised point of view the global values of Islam have often presente d the religion as ââ¬Ëbarbaricââ¬â¢ restricting many natural flows of human life. In many instances, the religious beliefs are also stated to reflect the society to be male dominated. For instance, Islam states that men can have more than one wife provided he is able to render equal love and affection to each (Long, 2009: 92). Similarly, from the global perspective wearing a veil is considered to be a religious belief that creates a social difference between the Muslim women and men of the same as well as other religions. Thus, it is

Nuclear Weapon Testing Essay Example for Free
Nuclear Weapon Testing Essay Nuclear Weapons testing have realized radiation into the environment. These tests have always been justified as necessary for national security. According to me, I disagree because if a nation allows nuclear weapons testing in its ground, then it should be ready for the aftermath repercussion, which is quite devastating. There is need to avoid using nuclear weapons for a nations security at the expense of its private citizens. Non-nuclear weapons can instead be used since they are less costs and just benefits. Risks of Nuclear Weapons According to Regina (2004), nuclear weapons testing pose environmental and international threats especially to the population surrounding the nuclear testing plant. The following highlights are the risks: â⬠¢ The explosion of nuclear device spreads lethal radioactive materials like dynamite (dirty bomb) which contaminates the region and will remain in the ecosystem for years. This causes cancer risks through drinking of contaminated water. â⬠¢ During nuclear weapon is testing, the major effects are either direct or indirect. Direct in the sense that it results to blast effects including production of flying debris and indirect in the sense that structures collapse especially when near a residential buildings or highly populated region. The population is then exposed to direct radiant energy and the thermal effect leading to permanent burns and traumatized population. A practical example is what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during Second World War. â⬠¢ It has a permanent effect to the environment leading to increased cancer rates, organ damage, conjoined twins birth system and genetic modifications. â⬠¢ Accidental launches due to false alarms can cause two counties to use the nuclear weapons accidentally leading to mass destruction and loss of life. â⬠¢ The effects of nuclear testing can go as far as across its borders to neighboring countries. For example the on Aug. 2, 1987, the explosion at the Novaya Zemlya test site in the Russian Arctic produced radioactivity that was detected in Scandinavia (Glasstone, 2003). Benefits of non-nuclear weapons for national security Basically, using non-nuclear weapons in advantageous: â⬠¢ The costs of nuclear weapons are very high as compared to non-nuclear weapons. Hence these resources could substantially be used for other developmental issues for the country. â⬠¢ They do not pose environmental risks to the private citizens and state hence a healthy nation. â⬠¢ Non-nuclear weapons reflects reduction of tension between two nations hence improves their relations especially between the state and private citizens. â⬠¢ Nuclear weapons powers have qualitative constraints as compared to the quantitative cuts of their arsenals Measures like total ban should be formulated by global treaties against nuclear weapons that should: â⬠¢ Pressurize countries to forgo the process nuclear launches. â⬠¢ Build confidence and strengthen the growing conviction about the ineffectiveness of nuclear armaments for the security of nations. â⬠¢ Improve safety and security through the international monitoring network in nuclear stations. Basing on the current global security realities countries should come up with well-formulated policy to ban the use of nuclear weapons especially to the countries that have high nuclear arsenals like USA, Russia Pakistan and India (Hurst, et al, 2005). In conclusion, nuclear weapons do not contribute to the security of a nation but are of self-aggression and destruction; therefore, they should be completely abolished to avoid their further imminent threat. The KKK or Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee by former Confederate Soldiers. Some of the founders of this organization consisted of; Captain John Lester, Major James Crowe, and Richard Reed to name a few. Their main target at the time was blacks and any white person that stood with them. The Ku Klux Klan was the head of the racism movement in America. Being a hate group among minorities, they made them live in terror day in and day out. The KKK was the most feared group of people in the 1860ââ¬â¢s. The Ku Klux Klan is better known for their bizarre costumes. They wore white robes with tall cone shaped hats that would cover their whole face except for their eyes, which was cut out. Even to this day, they follow the same dress code as they did when the organization was founded in 1866. Around 1920, the Ku Klux Klan started to burn wooden crosses in the yards of black residents in hopes they would instill enough fear that they would leave. The Ku Klux Klan also had billets that each member would hold. In 1866, when the Ku Klux Klan was founded, Nathan Bedford Forrest was the Grand Wizard of the Empire or also known as Imperial Wizard. Other than his military experience, he was not well educated, did not have experience in leading any type of people, and died not to long after the Ku Klux Klan was founded. The Ku Klux Klan Act was passed in 1871, which allowed the congress to arrest or prosecute any acts of violence that were held by the Ku Klux Klan or any form of terrorism against any individual. The Ku Klux Klan was declared unconstitutional in 1882 by the United States Supreme Court. Unfortunately, Ulysses S. Others like, the white supremacy groups, other KKK members, Neo-Nazis, and others that support and follow in their footsteps. One canââ¬â¢t help but to think about their ulterior motives. The KKK claims they are not racist but do not want African Americans, Hispanics, and any other race to join their alliance. Some of the KKK groups say they love but do not hate, yet they hate gays, bi-racial relationships, and we will be dammed to hell if we practice in such behaviors. They practice in what they believe in and that is making whites the superior race and although in the eyes of millions of Americans, it is wrong because we are supposed to accept everyone as they are. Regrettably, they believe only whites should exist, which sadly is protected in their constitutional rights of freedom of speech and expression.

Philosophy And Its Importance Of Philosophy - 861 Words
Philosophy and Its Importance Doing philosophy as many philosophers demonstrate over time and in the present is to simply question the understanding of what is known and not known or accepted and unaccepted. This is to say, that philosophers must question all aspects of life and all the surrounding dimensions of the world. In doing so, the philosopher is trying to grasp a firmer or different understanding of the truth that is either presently or not presently known; whether comforting or not comforting. One of the worldââ¬â¢s most famous and original philosophers Socrates, had a student named Plato who explains this very concept of philosophy in the ââ¬Å"Allegory of the Caveâ⬠when describing what it would be like for the newly free prisoner to realize the actual true reality in which the prisoner lives in. ââ¬Å"[The prisoner would] be pained and dazzled and unable to see whose shadows [the prisoner had] seen beforeâ⬠, but the prisoner would now see reality more clea rly than previously seen before. (Plato) Though the prisonerââ¬â¢s revelation seems to be uncomforting, Plato follows this newly sorrowful seen reality by asserting that the prisonerââ¬â¢s next steps in continuing would be to ââ¬Å"see the sun, not images of it in water or some alien place, but the sun itself, in its own place, and be able to study it.â⬠(Plato) The prisoner could now expand on this new realization of reality and allow this new view to further carry the prisoner to future and further understandings of reality and itsShow MoreRelatedImportance And Importance Of Philosophy1179 Words à |à 5 PagesSarah Smith Philosophy 102 Dan Synnesvedt 18 September 2017 What is Philosophy? Juvenile Rehabilitation: Adult Prisons vs. Juvenile Incarceration Maureen Fries-Labra English 122 Anna Hopson December 14, 2009 Juvenile Rehabilitation: Adult Prisons vs. Juvenile Incarceration The criminal justice system has a branch for juvenile offenders. Established in the early twentieth century; it is the responsibility of this division to decide the fates of youthful offenders. This is administered by family court with support of social workers and family. With the increased number of youthful, violent offenders, many are being processed and sentenced as adults. Public concern over the effectiveness of the juvenile courts when dealing with these offenders has brought about change in the justice system. (Stolba, 2001). The courts now, are quicker to transfer a juvenilesââ¬â¢ case to adult court than when the juvenile system was first formed. There stands a conflict of interests within the two court systems. Juvenile courts are to protect the rights of youths determined incapable of adult decisions. The primary concern is that the youth be rehabilitated and not become a repeat offender. Thus, protecting the child from incarceration with adult criminals and any possible future victims. The concerns of the adult court is to make sure the convicted offender pays for their crime and that the victim gets justice. Rehabilitation is not a primary concer of the adult justice system. It is the very nature of the criminal justice system to hold those accountable for their actions. In the adult courts the purpos is to be judged by a jury of our peers and held accountable for crimes committed. There must be consequences faced for criminal actions. The adult and juvenile courts handle the proceedings quite differently. The adult court has a defendant whom appears for a bail hearing. Happiness Is A State Of Contentment - 805 Words
What is happiness? Happiness is a state of contentment. For instance, when I was a child at the age of 5 years old, I would find happiness by eating dirt, playing hide and seek, and being with my older siblings. The connotation could be defined in many actions; it depends on who the question is towards. If somebody just sees the negative aspects of life he does not notice the wonderful ones. Happiness comes in a whole variety of ways. Whenever a kindergartner is asked what makes him happy, he would say hugging family,â⬠ââ¬Å"eating candy,â⬠ââ¬Å"playing with toys,ââ¬Å" and ââ¬Å"friends.â⬠If a kindergartener says giving hugs or receiving hugs, for instance; the hug of his parents how his father scent of cologne he puts before he goes to work. The scent of his mother s perfume which he helped choosing with his dad. How their hearts beat next to his ear as they hug him. This type of comfort is near love which he feels with the people closest to his heart hugs him he then gets the joy of glee. Happiness is found everywhere and one must simply search in the right places to find it. For instance, someone who just learned how to tie his shoes could demonstrate happiness by getting his shoe and declaring how he learned. While he ties his shoes and hears the encouragement of his parents saying ââ¬Å"you can do itâ⬠it then leads him to touch his shoes and sees it accomplished. The city grew very fast, and over the next ten years the population of West Tennessee expanded from 2500 to 100,000. The majority of families at the time took to farming, and with the help of the fertile land, Memphis soon became the center for growing and trading cotton in the Southeast. Indeed, cotton became king in Memphis, bringing in black men and women to work forced labor on plantations. According to the census of 1820, 20% of the populations of Memphis were slaves, and that number is said to have risen throughout the 19th century. Racial tension in Memphis began with its first and second mayor. Marcus B. Winchester was the irst mayor of Memphis and is said to have committed political suicide when he married a woman who was a quarter black. The second mayor of Memphis, Isaac Rawlings, had a common-law marriage with black woman, having multiple children with her. These encounters were socially unacceptable and looked down upon by white plantation owners, even though the majority of whites in Memphis at the time favored the gradual emancipation of slaves. We will write a custom essay sample on Eczema or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page As the civil war approached, the black population grew as more black slaves were brought to Memphis to work the cotton fields. During the Civil War, Memphis sided with the Confederates, but it was uickly captured by the Union who strategically wanted the town as the sight of a naval yard. The Union also made Memphis a freedmans colony, and many neighboring black slaves came to Memphis once they were emancipated to partake in education and paid labor. Memphis fell so easily to the Union that most of its infrastructure remained in place. For a brief moment, Memphis became a city of opportunity to black Americans and a place where black communities thrived. Yet as white Memphians saw themselves competing with former slaves, tensions ran high on many of their newly arrived black neighbors in a riot that left forty-six dead, nearly wice that many injured, five women raped, approximately 100 blacks robbed, and ninety-one homes, four churches, and all twelve black schools destroyed. [l] The riots did not stop until martial law was declared and troops from Nashville arrived in Memphis to force peace. For a good many years, the black community suffered and struggled to regain prominence, most of them being too poor to move away for new opportunities. With all the schools destroyed, the educational opportunities vanished and the ability of black to become literate and contribute to society became almost impossible. Yet this would not be the only disaster in Memphis. In the 1870s, a series of yellow fever epidemics plagued the city. In 1878, the worst of the yellow fever epidemics hit, and 25,000 people fled. 17,000 contracted the fever and over 5,000 died in the summer of 1878. Of the population that would remain in Memphis, 70% of those would be blacks who were too poor flee. The city of Memphis, which was already in debt, lost much of its tax base and went bankrupt. At the end of the 1800s and the early 1900s, Memphis would turn around again economically, yet many of the areas social problems would remain. Memphis fared reasonably well in addressing the problems of its white community, but the citys black citizens were shunted aside, their civil rights and their human dignity subordinated to a cult of white supremacy. [2] Around this time, railroads connected Memphis to the Atlantic Ocean, allowing it to become one of the largest manufacturers and shippers of hardwood in the United States.

NAFTA Argumentative Essay Example For Students
NAFTA Argumentative Essay Effective on January 1, 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) was enacted as a new dream, one designed to enhance the economiesand production of goods for the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Since itsconception, it was, and still remains today a controversy over the potentialgreatness and predictive results vs. the actual facts and figures that have beenwitnessed. Now, only some five years later, many would agree that this dreamhas developed into a nightmare for those on all sides of the border. Thisagreements far-reaching and damaging effects have been feltin the United States mostly by the small business owners, and the individual middle-to-lower classworker. I will expand on these points, however, I must also mention the plight ofour nations neighbors, who share in the consequences of this pact. NAFTA is onits way to marking a decline in the American economy, an increase inunemployment, and a general deterioration in the morale of the workforce inThe glorious the ory of NAFTA sure sounded innocent enough. In fact, itpainted the beautiful picture of North American countries holding hands in aunion bound for excellence. Together, they would strive for a common wealthand to each, a revival of imports and exports; thus improving the economictraditions of all. Free trade (eliminating tariffs) between countries andexpansion of sales across the border were the main objectives in the agreement, and each side had something to gain through the process(Online, 1). Canada, whoimports vast amounts of agricultural products, appreciated the elimination oftariffs on the goods that are brought into their country. For the United States, the opportunities were many. The expansion of trade meant more productneeded, therefore more jobs would be created to employ the people. It alsoallowed for the establishment of manufacturers anywhere in North Americawithout any exchange penalties. This is what made it possible to abuse thecheaper labor in Mexico to make American products and then sell these back tothe Americans at the same price. Mexico had bright hopes for the future, also. Itseemed they had been granted a more respectable position in internationalcommerce. In addition, it could also provide more jobs for their poverty-strickenpublic(Creations, 1-5). Collectively, these merits looked great on paper andachieved much support from both democrats and republicans, providing for itspassing in both the Senate and House of Representatives. In its only opposition, were mostly labor unions, knowing the effects of the cheaper Mexican labor; andhuman rights groups, fearing the rights of the Hispanic laborers would beIn Mexico, NAFTA has not lived up to any of its expectations. The salarythat the workers accrued has remained the same, and in many cases hasdecreased, because of competitiveness. However, their average production hasincreased 36.4% since NAFTAs implementation. In turn, since they are workingmore and earning less, these employees have expe rienced a definite decline ofpurchasing power. In 1997 alone, over 7.7 million Hispanic employees were beingpaid less than the legal minimum wage of $3.40.. A DAY!! Overall, the middleclass of Mexico is disappearing. Since NAFTAs birth, the country has been forcedto watch as at least eight million would be middle class Hispanics were being castout into poverty. These results can be directly attributed to NAFTA because, inthe ten years before the plan, the poverty rate maintained a constant figure of34%; yet from 1994 to 1997 the rate went to 60%, almost doubling in threeyears(*Watch, 1-93). The working conditions of these laborers have not improvedeither. These substandard facilities are often much more dangerous anduncomfortable than the label sweatshop implies. America has not fared much better than Mexico. Actually, I should sayAmerican people are not any better off.. The scales are tipped heavily by thestories of NAFTA victims, with not much recoil from success stories. In a stu dyconducted by the Public Citizens Global Trade Watch, some 60 of 67 companies, who had specifically promised to produce jobs, had failed to meet their goal oreven expand their business in Mexico. In fact, these companies had documentedlayoffs due to NAFTA. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, approximately214,902 American workers have been classified .as being laid off due to NAFTA. Furthermore, the Commerce Department canceled a survey program of U.S. .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f , .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .postImageUrl , .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f , .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:hover , .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:visited , .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:active { border:0!important; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:active , .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u17e4c1c25d20c07c1cdafec7ea51cd6f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: In this paper I will show my knowledge of many dif Essay companies to prove NAFTAs job creation, because the results were soembarrassingless than 1,500 jobs could be accounted for (*Watch, 1-93). Thereare many reasons for the loss of jobs. The most obvious and the most disgracefulis that of the big corporations moving their factories to Mexico. This is insultingto the American working class and an exploitation of the workers south of theborder. Some may only argue this is capitalism, but whatever the argument, it isharmful for everyone but the company owner. A vast sector of the jobs beingdestroyed by NAFTA, are those in either automobiles or electronics; jobs that areconsistently paying above average wages. Those who are not losing their jobs, aregetting paid less for doing them. By threatening that their jobs will be moved toMexico, workers are forced to accept lower wages and benefits to do the exactsame work that they have always been doing. This also disables the unions andtherefore gives the people absolutely no say so in the matters (Teamsters, 3). What choice do they really have when competing for their jobs, with those whowill work for less in one entire day than the Americans will in an hour Thisaccounts for the drop in morale of employees. Workers are not the onlyindividuals who are hurt by the agreement. Small business owners are being runout of their venture, with the competitions ability to reduce prices (by payingworkers less or relocating). This cycle is only widening a gap between the upperand lower classes, making the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. Nonetheless, thepeople know exactly whom to blame for these troubles they are having. Inrecent opinion surveys, the results show that most Americans are mindful of66% of Americans believe that free trade agreements. 66% of Americans believe that NAFTA has helped only the73% of Americans believe that NAFTA has directly hurt thesmall businesses of the United States. 58% of Americans agree that foreign trade has been bad forour economy and cheap imports have cost jobs and wages. 81% of Americans say that Congress should not acceptanymore trade agreements concerning consumer safety, labor, or the environment(Watch, 1-59). It appears that I am in agreement with the given American prospective, inthat NAFTAs disappointments are rampant. The information and statistics thatare provided for us are astounding. Every set of data seems to pinpoint the sameconclusion time and again, yet I cannot see as anything is being done to curb thedamages. Those same ones who said that NAFTA would work are still claimingthat it is working now, and those who opposed in the first place, are still opposing. It seems as though our NAFTA politics are at a standstill, while unemploymentand the economy are not. But something must be done about this situation now, before it develops into a disaster for all parties concerned. I firmly believe thatNAFTA has the potential to damage our nations economy, drastically increase ourunemployment, and to stunt the pride and nationalism that is felt for ourcountry. That is, of course, if it hasnt done that alreadyBibliography:Bibliography Berner, Bernhard, Kutler. eds. Firsthand America: A His tory of the UnitedStates. 4th edition. Vol. 2. Chapter 29. The Tragedy of King Lear Essay Example Essay Example
The Tragedy of King Lear Essay Example Paper The Tragedy of King Lear Essay Introduction A Comparison of Psychological and Physical Deceit and Disguise In many of Shakespearean works, he suggests that appearances are not reflective of reality and uses this idea to develop many subplots in his works. He is notorious for constructing these false identities to advance the plotting and create unsuspecting twists. As his plays progress, different characters employ different strategies to promote their actions, with some opting to psychologically deceive their targets while others select to physically disguise themselves as someone else. Shakespearean King Lear, Is no exception; he portrays this theme through the various disguises of an array of characters that utilize deceit to reach their goals, which range from being supportive to being sinister. This element of deceit and disguise is first established in the opening scene when the reader discovers that King Lear Is planning to delve his kingdom between his three daughters. He tests his daughters by demanding them to procla im their love for him, with the intentions of awarding the daughter who displays her love to him the best with the largest share of his kingdom. The Tragedy of King Lear Essay Body Paragraphs The play as Just begun and Shakespearean theme of fake appearances has already arisen, as the outside appearances that each of the sisterââ¬â¢s displays for their father is not in accordance with their actual thoughts. General and Reagan, King Learns two oldest daughters, both spin verbose and grandeur explanations about their deep love for him with General starting off by stating, ââ¬Å"Sir, I love you more than word can wield the matter. Beyond all manners of so much I love youâ⬠(1. 1. 60-67). Reagan then plays off of her sisterââ¬â¢s lead and begins to say, ââ¬Å"l am made of that self mettle as my sister. And mind I am alone felicitate / In your dear Highnessââ¬â¢ loveâ⬠(1. 1. 76-84). This psychological ploy they use on King Lear seems to work, as he becomes frustrated and dissatisfied with his youngest daughter, Cordilleraââ¬â¢s, answer. As King Lear waits for her to match her sistersââ¬â¢ responses, Cornelia refuses to make such comments, asserting that, ââ¬Å"Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty / According to my bond, no more nor lessâ⬠(1. 1. 100-102). As a result of this, King Lear disowns Cornelia, abolishes her from the kingdom and splits the kingdom between the other two sisters. Following this incident, the Earl of Kent, who is the Kingââ¬â¢s most loyal nobleman and servant, while attempting to reconcile the King about his brash decision to banish Cornelia, is also hastily exiled from the kingdom for giving his opinion on the matter. Here, you can see that King Lear has let his emotions get the best of him as he tells Kent, ââ¬Å"Five days we do allot thee for provision To shield thee from disasters of the world, And on the sixth to turn thy hated back Thy banished trunk be found in our dominions, The moment is thy death. Away! By Jupiter, This shall not be revoked. â⬠(1. ââ¬Ë. 197-203) Not only has the plans of obtaining the power of the kingdom gone accord ing to their plan, but General and Reagan were also able to unexpectedly rid the kingdom of two of their potential obstacles to the throne: one being Learns favorite daughter, Cornelia, and the other being his most loyal servant, Kent. The aftermath of this sequence of events turns out to play a large role in the future, as the King will soon learn that he made a mistake. Even though this is only the start of psychological deception in the play, the importance of its presence sets the tone for the play and makes it clear that everyone is susceptible to such trickery, even the almighty King. As the plot of King Lear and his daughters begins to develop in the opening scene, we are simultaneously introduced to another one of King Learns nobleman, the Earl of Gloucester. Early on, we learn that Gloucester is an adulterer and has a bastard son, Edmund. In contrast to Edmund is Edgar, Gloucester oldest and legitimate son. At the beginning of the second scene of the Act One, Edmund gives a soliloquy on the lack of respect and class he has received for being a bastard, stating that â⬠Thou, Nature, art my goddess. Now, gods, stand up for bastardsâ⬠(l. I. 1-23)! Here we learn of Edmunds plan to betray Edgar, by means of a forged letter, which documents Edgerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"planâ⬠to kill his own father. When Gloucester reads the letter, he barely questions the authenticity of the letter and lets his emotions overcome him, ââ¬Å"O villain, villain!. Abominable villain! â⬠(l. Ii. 79). Afterwards, Edmund meets up with Edgar and alerts him of the news that Gloucester is livid at Edgar and that he is chasing him. Pretending to be of assistance to Edgar, Edmund suggests that he avoid Gloucester as much as possible and to remain armed in case Gloucester finds him. Here, Edgar naively mistakes Edmunds plan to protect his own brother as a sign of sincerity because of Edmunds ability to swiftly talk coupled with his deceptive nature. This makes it easy fo r Edmund to take advantage of the trusting and gullible personality of Edgar. In reality, Edmund is merely setting the bait for Gloucester to fully turn his back on Edgar so that Gloucester will anoint Edmund as the next heir to the throne. Edmund succeeds in accomplishing the next step of his plan when he convinces Edgar to flee Gloucester castle as their father approaches the room. Right when Edgar flees, Edmund intentionally wounds his arm, affirming ââ¬Å"Some blood drawn on me would beget opinion / Of my more fierce endeavor. I have seen drunkards / Do more than this in sport. / Father! Fatherâ⬠(11. 1. 36-39)! By framing Edgar for his wounds as he fled the scene, Edmund has now secured Gloucester trust which has led him to the condemnation of Edgerââ¬â¢s death. As the two plots continue to unravel, more disguises begin to unfold, with one of them being Kent after he was expelled from Learns Kingdom. Instead of double crossing his friends and family like Edmund had, Ke nt chose to return to Learns kingdom, disguised as an ordinary peasant, even though he had been wronged by Lear. When asked by King Lear who he was, Kent simply replied, ââ¬Å"A man, sirâ⬠(l. V. 1 1). Lear seemed to be content with the manââ¬â¢s answer and allowed the newly disguised Kent to become his new servant. Even after that Kent was using was not of any importance, his characteristics lead him to be different than almost every character in the play. His role and physical disguise of being a random, selfless person who cares about the well-being of the King over his win safety Juxtaposes the psychological disguise the two sisters, General and Reagan, displayed back in Act One. Even though Kent has no familial relations to the King, he cared more about the King than the Kings own two daughters did. Not only did the two sisters deceive Lear into dividing his kingdom amongst them, but they both treated Lear with disrespect and banished him from their respective kingdoms . One cannot simply put a price Kenââ¬â¢s loyalty to King Lear, even after being expatriated by the King. Much like Kent, Edgar was also forced away from his kingdom ND was required to disguise himself as a means of protection. Under the name of Poor Tom, Edgar disguised himself as a beggar; however, unlike Kent, Edgerââ¬â¢s entire persona changed. In an aside, we learn that throughout Edgerââ¬â¢s time as a homeless man, there was no possibility that life could have been worse for him ââ¬â ââ¬Å"And worse I may be yet. The worst is not / So long as we can say ââ¬ËThis is the worstâ⬠(IV. I. 30-31). It is only during his time as a homeless man that he knows that life couldnââ¬â¢t get any worse. Such logic would make sense in this situation because it is only at a manââ¬â¢s utmost lowest point where he becomes the true essence of what he is. With that being said, by spending time as a beggar and being homeless, Edgerââ¬â¢s body is stripped away to the ve ry pith of his being and it is there that he finds what he is truly made of. When Edgar has almost fully adjusted to his new life as a homeless bum, he then sees his father, Gloucester, walking towards him, but without any eyes. Here, Gloucester believes that Edgar is Poor Tom and also divulges that he knows that Edgar is innocent and that it was Edmund who was behind everything. Gloucester hen asks Edgar to lead him to Dover, where ââ¬Å"There is a cliff, whose high and bending head / Looks fearfully in the confined deep. ââ¬Ë shall no leading needâ⬠(IV. Ii. 83-88). At this point in the play, I was puzzled as to why Edgar did not disclose his real identity to his father, but I believe that it all boiled down to his father condemning him to death, which would always be hard to forgive. Edgar would eventually deceive Gloucester by not letting him commit suicide and Jump off of the cliffs of Dover, but instead Jump onto flat ground. This means of deception was a necessity to prevent Gloucester from killing himself which was easily diverted. After experiencing so many life-altering events, Edgar had finally grown into and found his new identity. Having become encapsulated in this new physical disguise that he had finally developed into, it ultimately gave him the strength and mental fortitude to face and defeat his brother in the final scene. By creating and interweaving these deceptions and disguises amongst all the characters, Shakespeare is able to more effectively develop the characters of the play. Much like the formal title, The Tragedy of King Lear, it was tragic and quite ironic that at the end of the play neither Kent nor Edgar got a chance to adequately reveal their true identities that were hiding beneath their disguises to both King Lear and Gloucester. Lear was far too delusional to understand Kenââ¬â¢s explanation that he was the Kings new servant due to the combination of his uneasy mental state along with Cordilleraââ¬â¢s corpse in his arms, whereas we learn that Gloucester died from shock when Edgar attempted to reveal Shakespeare ends the play with only three surviving characters, leaving the reader to contemplate the mystery of their futures.
